Brief History of Bhagalpur

According to the Mahabharata this city was the capital of Anga, a kingdom ruled by Karna who was a great warrior as well as famous for his generosity. During an ancient period, this city was known as Bhagadatt–Puram and finds mention with same name in Ramayana, Mahabharata and Panchtantra. This city was a part of Magadha, the most powerful kingdom during 6th century BC. Archaeological department had found boats and coins of Middle and Far East in an excavation conducted at Nathnagar.

About Bhagalpur

There is a temple dating back to Gupta period (320-500). Bhagalpur was also a seat of learning as evident from the ruins of ancient Vikramshila University located only 44 km east of Bhagalpur.

According to the detail of last census conducted in 2011, total population of district Bhagalpur was 3,037,766. Report of last census revealed that male and female population in Bhagalpur was 1,615,663 and 1,422,103 respectively. 19.83 percent of total population lives in urban regions and 80.17 percent people reside in rural areas.
