About Bhagalpur

Bhagalpur is the city located in an eastern Bihar and a well known place for silk production. Just due to the production of quality silk, Bhagalpur is famous as a silk city across the country. There is a heavy demand of Tussar silk and Tussar sarees of Bhagalpur in international markets. Apart from silk trade, this city majorly produces rice and sugar. Patna, the capital of Bihar is 215 km away from Bhagalpur, while its distance from Kolkata is 411km. It is at the height of 141 feet above sea level. It is one among the fast developing regions of Bihar and is administrative headquarters of Bhagalpur district.

Brief History of Bhagalpur

According to the Mahabharata this city was the capital of Anga, a kingdom ruled by Karna who was a great warrior as well as famous for his generosity. During an ancient period, this city was known as Bhagadatt–Puram and finds mention with same name in Ramayana, Mahabharata and Panchtantra. This city was a part of Magadha, the most powerful kingdom during 6th century BC. Archaeological department had found boats and coins of Middle and Far East in an excavation conducted at Nathnagar.

About Bhagalpur

There is a temple dating back to Gupta period (320-500). Bhagalpur was also a seat of learning as evident from the ruins of ancient Vikramshila University located only 44 km east of Bhagalpur.

Khagaria, Munger, Banka, Madhepura and Purnia in Bihar and Sahebganj and Godda in Jharkhand lies near to Bhagalpur. Population in Bhagalpur

According to the detail of last census conducted in 2011, total population of district Bhagalpur was 3,037,766. Report of last census revealed that male and female population in Bhagalpur was 1,615,663 and 1,422,103 respectively. 19.83 percent of total population lives in urban regions and 80.17 percent people reside in rural areas. Such equation suggests that population of urban regions is 602,532 and the number for rural regions is 2,435,234. As far as sex ratio is concerned, Bhagalpur had 880 women to 1000 men in 2011.
